Lady Franklin would launch a smear campaign against him for suggesting that Englishmen could do something like that and for listening to the Inuit. These included several silver forks and spoons that belonged to Franklin and his officers.įor Rae, the stories of cannibalism would dog his career for the rest of his life. In addition, Rae was shown several objects that were identified as belonging to Franklin and his crew. They told Rae that they had found bones that were broken apart. Rae would continue to speak with other Inuit and they confirmed the story of the starving sailors, and also provided the first evidence of cannibalism among the sailors. The Inuk would tell him that a party of 35-40 white men had died of starvation at the mouth of the Back River. In 1854, John Rae, who was surveying the Boothia Peninsula for the Hudson’s Bay Company, would meet with an Inuk on April 21, 1854. Prior to this, there are stories of seeing men on the Erebus prior to its sinking. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, the encounters could have just been omitted from the records at the time they were recorded.Īccording to oral histories and information gathered by explorers looking for the Franklin Expedition, several Inuit boarded an abandoned ship in 1850, which had been icebound off King William Island for some time. The Victory Point Record states that the ships were deserted on Apbut it doesn’t mention any Inuit, nor are there any mentioning of Inuit in the ship logs. It is not known if the Inuit encountered the doomed crew and ships prior to the abandonment of the ships. ![]() ![]() The Inuit would play a vital role in learning what happened, as they were the last ones to ever interact with the doomed crew members. Through these searches, thousands of kilometres of coastline would be mapped, and the story of what happened would slowly emerge. Lady Franklin would press the British Admiralty to launch a search for the expeditions in 1848, and these searches would continue for decades. Over the next 400 kilometre march across the Arctic, the remaining men died, never even coming within a few hundred kilometres of the nearest Canadian outpost. By this point, nine officers and 15 men had died. On April 22, 1848, almost three years after they first set off, the remaining crew abandoned the ships and began walking across the sea ice towards the Canadian mainland. The crew would winter the next two years at the island, as various members, including Franklin himself, passed away. Spending the 1845-46 winter trapped in the ice off Beechey Island, the ice would thaw in the summer of 1846, but only two months later both ships were trapped in the ice once again off King William Island. After encountering the Prince of Wales and Enterprise whaling ships in July 1845, the crew of the ships were never heard from again. Setting sail from Kent, England in the morning of May 19, 1845, the 24 officers and 110 men on the two ships had no idea that none of them would ever see England again, except for five men who were discharged in Greenland after becoming sick. Not only did they interact with the doomed sailors and helped other explorers in their search for the crew, but even in the 21 st century they helped locate the ships beneath the waves.įirst, a bit of a refresher on the Franklin Expedition. ![]() Last year, I was on This Is A Disaster Podcast to talk about the Franklin Expedition, but today on the podcast I wanted to talk not about the disaster itself, but the Inuit and their role in the investigation of the disaster. But there is a perfect Autumn for her that is not golden warm, rich but not dark. But when it is obvious that she is not so deep as to qualifiy her as a Deep Autumn, they sometimes assume Summer may be more appropriate since very warm, golden colors never quite feel right on them. People with these types of colorings are often thought of as a Winter, due to the darker eyes, or perhaps a Deep Autumn. Her hair is mostly a neutral brown with some golden highlights. The eyes are a mixture of soft olive, warm brown, greyish-green. The warmth in Amy's skin is undeniable, but it does seem kind of neutral and muted. Below is a photo of her with a range of hair color, and she looks great in all of them :) But I advise not to go too flat and dark nor too light/platinum blonde, and add warm highlights and/or lowlights to add depth and dimension. Darker brown or lighter blonde will work, and neither is better than the other. As I tell all Soft Autumns (and Soft Summers), there is a pretty wide range of hair colors that she could wear. Speaking of hair color, she asked me which hair color was better blonde or darker brown. Had her hair been light blonde naturally, I would have no problem labeling her a Dusty Soft Autumn, even a Sunlit Autumn had it been very golden blonde. Another reason was that even as a young child, her hair was not that blonde. I believe she is a Smokey Soft Autumn. I chose the deeper soft Autumn because of the depth of her eyes, though she actually is more mid-value. Warming things up slightly will amplify the subtle warm tones in her. But she clearly has more warmth than coolness. ![]() This means that she can successfully choose colors from both sides of the spectrum as long as they are not cool or too warm. She has blended temperatures, and as I always say, one will be more dominant than the other one, even if it is just slightly. If she were, perhaps a Soft Summer, warming up her top and adding warm makeup would not be flattering. ![]() Her eyes are simply too warm to be a Cool Summer. Along with the navy top and pinkish lipstick and blush that was already there, I added some light grey eyeshadow to test out the previous Cool Summer assessment she received from someone else. The photo on the left (above) was the original photo she sent me. But first let's look at a few of her photos: Sometimes they never give me any feedback at all. But I just tell clients my thoughts and hopefully they will agree. So I wasn't sure how she would accept this season. But if you are familiar with this season, none of those colors are in her palette. We now have a 5th person in a row that turned out to be yet another Smokey Soft Autumn! Well, I have analyzed other real women in-between these examples who were different seasons but those who have volunteered for my case study lately have all been Smokey Soft Autumns.Īnd that is good because it will allow you to see what this often misdiagnosed season looks like in different people.Ĭhantelle told me she felt she looked good in royal blue and other jewel tones. ![]() But like all sister-seasons, she can borrow some colors from the Sunlit Soft Spring as well. This is why I chose the Sunlit Soft Autumn for her. ![]() Remember, there is a bit of luminosity (sunlight and warmth) in the Sunlit Autumn that the Dusty doesn’t have. But with the warm eyes and the fact that she showed me other photos such as these below made me choose Sunlit Soft Autumn for her (she seems to flow into the Sunlit Soft Spring). If Abby had blue-eyes, I may be tempted to suggest the Dusty Soft Autumn which points toward the Sunlit Soft Summer. This will help you pinpoint your actual season. And in my ColorBreeze System, one key aspect is looking for a person’s sister-season. While her skin’s surface looks a little on the cool side, her eyes are warm. Since she’s not a Warm Autumn, and too light overall to be a Deep Autumn or even darker Soft Autumns, this leaves the lighter Soft Autumns. You can clearly see the warmth in her, though it muted compared to a Warm Autumn. Case #12 is another Soft Autumn, but not a Smokey Soft Autumn like the last 5 volunteers were :) "Abby" was an easy one for me. Groups of turned up cards can be moved too on the tableau. This means if there is a face down card remaining after the 3 of Clubs is moved, it should be turned up, and it becomes another card you can build with. Remember that in each of the tableau columns, the last card should always be flipped face up. This is called “building.” For example, if the third column has a 3 of Clubs, it can be moved to another column beneath a card that is either a 4 of Hearts or Diamonds. Similarly, cards on the tableau can be moved around to other columns where there is a card of the opposite color and an incrementally higher number. Either a 7 of Spades or Clubs from the stockpile can be placed on top of it. For example, let’s say there is an 8 of Hearts on the third column of the tableau. Stockpile cards can be placed below a card in the Tableau if that card is of the opposite color, and a number higher than the stock pile card. ![]() The tableau is the group of cards with the seven columns, with the last card of each column turned faced up, and with each column having an additional card (i.e., the first column has one card, the second column has two cards and so on until the seventh column which has seven cards) Moving the cards from the stockpile to the foundation or the tableau ![]() Moving the cards from the stockpile to the tableauĬards from the stock pile can also be placed in the Tableau. If your second card is a Two of Spades from the stockpile, you can then place that on top of the Ace of Spades in the Foundation pile. For example, if you happen to have an Ace of Spades as the first card turned over from your stockpile, you can place that card on the foundation pile for Spades. These cards can either go into the foundation or the tableau, which is the cards laid out in staircase fashion below the stockpile.Ĭards can be moved directly to the foundation if it’s in the correct order. Each card is removed from the stockpile one at a time, or three at a time, depending on the type of game. On the top left, you’ll see a stack of cards. Once you’ve done this with all four foundation piles, you win the game! Moving the cards from the stockpile to the foundation For example, you would place the Ace of Spades first, followed by the two of spades, then three of spades, until the King of Spades is placed. Each pile represents a different suit, and should be filled in order, starting with the Ace all the way to the King. These are the four empty areas at the top of the game. To win, you want to place all cards in the four foundation piles. ![]() How to play Klondike solitaire Goal of the game and how to win To pass time, miners would naturally play solitaire, and the term Klondike Solitaire, which pays homage to the territory, was coined. It was a grueling journey where miners would have to carry over a year's worth of food supply. Gold was discovered in the northwest region of Canada, or the Klondike area of the Yukon territory, which triggered a rush of miners from the west coast of the United States. Even to this day, Patience is still used to describe the game, especially in Europe.īelieve it or not, the term Klondike Solitaire traces its history back to the gold rush of the late 1890s. Back then the game was called Patience, given that you need “patience” to win a game. We know the game developed in popularity in Germany, France, and later the rest of Europe around that time. The early origins of Solitaire date back to Germany in the 1780s. Why is it the game called Klondike solitaire?
